BRADENTON, Fla. – Larry LaVern Almond, born November 3, 1939, in Oskaloosa, Iowa, passed away peacefully on March 16, 2024, at the age of 84 in Bradenton, Fla.
Larry was a loving husband, father, and grandfather. He was a dedicated educator, coach, and community member whose impact on service will be felt by many.
Larry's teaching career spanned 35 years, taking his family from Iowa to Colorado to New Mexico (coached the 1968 state champions), and back to Iowa where his family resided in Independence. He taught shop classes, coached football and shotput/discus, and officiated USA Track and Field with his wife, Sandy, in his retirement. His passion for education and sports touched the lives of many students and athletes. Larry's commitment to teaching extended beyond the classroom, as his students built over 25 houses in the community. He was a gentle giant, had a loud bark, and was one of a kind to everyone who enjoyed his company.
One of Larry's proudest moments was his induction into the hall of fame at his alma mater, William Penn College, where he received recognition for not only his outstanding contributions to the field of education and athletics, but to the life he built for his family in Indee. He was a true mentor and role model to all who knew him, especially his wife, Sandy, and his four girls.
Larry was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Independence. In his free time, he enjoyed showing horses, raising West Highland and Scottish terriers, and building beautiful furniture for his family.
Larry is survived by his devoted wife of 61 years, Sandy, Parrish, Fla.; and their four daughters: Kim Karns of Tukwila, Wash., Kristine (Rick) Turner of Asbury, Iowa, Michelle (Jerry) Jones of Indianola, Iowa, and Bridgette (Jeff) Stevens of Omaha, Neb.; eight grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. Larry was preceded in death by his father, LaVern; mother, Dorothy; and sister, Linda Stroup.
A memorial service for immediate family will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, charitable donations can be made in Larry's honor to the Mustang Foundation, Inc., with the Independence Community School District.
The Brown & Sons Funeral Homes & Crematory in Bradenton, Fla., is assisting the family with arrangements.
Larry will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him, but his legacy of kindness, dedication, and love will live on forever.
