Auxiliary Captain, Elsie B Metcalf, 91, passed away on February 8,2024, in Bradenton, Florida. Elsie was born in Ocean Grove, NJ, and raised in Canton, Ohio. Her parents, James and Elsie Betts and her 6 siblings were very active at The Salvation Army Canton Citadel Corps. A graduate of Middlebranch High School Class of 1950 and The School for Officers Training of The Salvation Army.in 1952. Captain Metcalf was stationed at various Corps in Ohio including Salem, Massillon, Ashland, and Cleveland Temple where she met her future husband David Metcalf Sr. They were married January 15,1966, raising a son.
Captain Metcalf's career spanned over 60 years. In 1977, the couple were posted in charge of The Willemstad Seamans Home in Curacao. Returning to Ohio in 1979, they were asked to open a new Corps in Batavia Ohio. Other appointments were Newport, KY, and Keene, NH, retiring to Canton in 1989. Moving to Palmetto FL in 1998. Captain Metcalf attended the Bradenton FL Corps until her Promotion To Glory when God called her home. Captain Elsie Metcalf was preceded in death by her husband in 2002. She is survived by her son, David Metcalf, and his wife, Patty, 4 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren and 4 great-great grandchildren.
A Memorial Service will be held March 2, 2024, 3 PM at The Salvation Army 5328 24th St Bradenton FL. Interment at a later date at Woodside Cemetary, Middletown OH. Brown & Sons Funeral Homes & Crematory 43 Street Chapel, 604 43rd Street, Bradenton, FL 34209, is in charge of arrangements.
