For the U.S. Senate Race, We Recommend Angie Nixon

Posted

Florida's U.S. Senate race features Ashley Moody, the former Florida Attorney General whom Gov. DeSantis appointed to the seat when Marco Rubio became Secretary of State, and Angie Nixon, a six-year veteran of the Florida Legislature and its strongest voice against partisan gerrymandering.

We find Nixon to be a refreshingly genuine candidate who speaks directly to the very real struggles and concerns that Floridians are facing: the soaring inflation rates caused by the Iran War and the Trump administration’s tariff policy, an affordable housing crisis, a collapsing property insurance market, and a lack of access to basic healthcare for millions of our state’s residents.

Nixon has shown tremendous resilience, campaigning tirelessly across the state and, instead of hosting swanky fundraisers, holding door-knocking sessions and large public rallies while facing an onslaught of attacks from establishment Republican and Democrat political and media figures alike. The energy her campaign has generated is nearly unprecedented, demonstrating how strongly her working-people platform has resonated.

In the Democratic primary, Nixon defeated a DNC-backed candidate with a national profile in a landslide, despite her campaign having less than $1 million and her opponent having $18 million. Nixon, who does not take corporate or PAC money, is again being heavily outspent, yet continues to poll surprisingly well despite lacking DNC support. Hers is very much a people-powered campaign in the style of Bernie Sanders (who is supporting Nixon), and the authenticity it suggests is clearly resonating with voters.

Ashley Moody has been a garden-variety MAGA Republican during her nearly two years in the seat. Since joining the Senate in January 2025, Moody has rarely broken publicly with the Trump administration. Notable exceptions include her vote to bar January 6 defendants convicted of assaulting police from receiving payments from the administration's anti-weaponization fund and her opposition to an Interior Department proposal that could expand offshore drilling near Florida.

Most troublingly, while AG, Moody signed off on the unethical (and likely illegal) diversion of settlement funds meant to provide healthcare for Florida’s poorest children to Gov. DeSantis’ campaign against a referendum to legalize the recreational use of marijuana. She has yet to meaningfully address the relatively recent revelation, which likely explains why she has refused to debate her opponent. Moody is heavily supported by AIPAC and other pro-Zionist organizations and supported President Trump’s disastrous war of choice with Iran. Moody voted against a War Powers resolution directing Trump to remove U.S. forces from hostilities with Iran.

Moody's campaign has reported about $11.3 million, including nearly $5 million from individual donors and roughly $2.1 million from PAC and party committees. Separately, Stronger Safer Nation, a super PAC created to support Moody, has raised about $12 million, including $2.5 million from billionaire Ken Griffin, and has now spent nearly $5 million attacking Nixon as a “radical socialist” and “communist.”

From the tariffs to the wars to the presidential profiteering, there is a very strong argument that our Congress has abdicated its responsibilities under the checks-and-balances aspect of our government’s separation of powers. Ashley Moody has demonstrated that she lacks the ability to stand up to the executive branch in any meaningful way. Nixon has proven herself to be the kind of fighter the American people desperately need in Washington and have too few of in either party.

Most of all, Nixon threatens the status quo, which is why those on both sides of the aisle who benefit from it are working so hard to make sure she does not win. If you believe America has been trending on the wrong trajectory and that the American dream is becoming less and less accessible to more and more Americans, we believe Angie Nixon would be a big step in the right direction.
