Thank you Mr. Calovich, for taking the time, effort and expense to offer a choice away from the current commissioner who is often rude, uncivil, and thinks whoever is loudest wins. Commissioner Bearden has yet to acknowledge that he voted to approve so much of what we are now seeing as thousand-acre clear cut, soot producing, flood causing, wildlife killing, barren wastelands of future development. He often refers to "the previous board" as if he wasn't one of the six Beruff-controlled, Pedicini-managed rubber stamps that voted to eliminate wetland buffers and to keep impact fees at a minimum. His frequent claims of having Constitutional support for his positions reveal a fundamental Constitutional ignorance. Mr. Bearden wore his Pedicini mask for two years because he thought that was how to stay on the public payroll. On the day after the August 20, 2024 election, he changed masks for the same reason - to stay on the public payroll. I don't yet know enough about Mr. Calovich, but I am looking to support someone who will not take money from developers, the ability to present their position firmly but civilly, without increasing the volume.Someone that decides based on principle, not self-preservation.
Naming a road or portion of a road for Charlie Kirk is too political and very divisive... it appears that the proposal by the County Commissioner is a deliberate and intentional political move that will create dis-harmony, and provide some incitement to vandalous acts. Charlie Kirks views were and remain highly controversial and are heavily weighted to one side of the divided political spectrum in our country. *** It is the equal of, and as controversial as ripping colored rainbow bricks, or painting over Rainbow Pride and Black Pride memorials and murals. It is not prudent to build one-sided political memorials at this time. Like one old and wise Supreme Court Justice once said about free speech... goes something like, one is not allowed to yell FIRE in a crowded theatre. Should be apply to such "political taunting" probably meaningless memorial gestures.
I believe that one of the criteria of becoming an Ice agent is to be cruel. Time after time we see videos of these agents deliberately attempting to hurt people that they apprehend or simply push away. If a police officer in any US metropolis acted like this they would be relieved of duty, suspended or fired. Often President Trump has cited the need to protect federal buildings such as Ice facilities, from attackers. We should instead be protected from Ice.jim Tierney
Pat Neal has been trying to change the name of Moccasin Wallow Road ever since he started his development. Makes one wonder how it ended up on that list... I was able to gather over 700 signatures on a petition to not change the name. I can imagine how many I would get to not change the name to THAT!
Very good and detailed article. My take on the article is that the elimination of property taxes is just a shell game that shifts the revenue from local control to Tallahassee control while benefiting developers and banks. There is no free lunch, the local financial needs of the County would now be controlled by the State legislature giving them the power of the purse to support or penalize a County based on their political whims. This is a bad idea.

Charlie Kirk was no hero to the millions of people he hated and regularly vilified. He is being glorified for indoctrinating young people in his hateful world view. By naming a road or anything else after him we are saying that, in Manatee County, we celebrate hate, violence and misogyny. Please consider naming a roadway after someone we can all admire.
As a young person, I felt driven to understand how the Holocaust could have happened. I read everything I could, watched documentaries and through a history teacher friend, I was even introduced to a man who had been liberated from the concentration camp called Dachau.
Stephen Miller embodies the most horrific aspects of the people who orchestrated that historical event, and he emulates their cruelty. He's the wrong kind of person to be in charge of anything, and he's been given free reign to indulge his worst inclinations.
He belongs in prison.
Closed primaries close the opportunity of significant chunk of voters to have any influence on who their representatives are. I've lived in Manatee for four years and I'm pretty sure no one in county government is independent or a Democrat. I'd love to hear from someone when the last independent or Democrat even made it to a general election.
