USPS Whistleblower says Trump's new Rules on Mail Ballots Could Lead to "Grave, Catastrophic Failure"

Posted

An anonymous federal whistleblower has warned that the U.S. Postal Service's rushed implementation of President Donald Trump’s executive order on mail-in voting risks a "catastrophic failure" of the election system ahead of the November 2026 midterm elections.

The whistleblower, whose report was released by Democratic Senator Richard Blumenthal, alleges the USPS developed an untested, "slapdash" Federal Mail Ballot Portal that discards standard safety practices to meet an impossible September 1 deadline.

Key concerns highlighted in the disclosure include:

  • Zero Percent Failure Rate: The system is designed to reject entire batches of ballots if even a single barcode fails to scan, potentially disenfranchising millions of voters.
  • Legal Violations: The whistleblower claims USPS continued working on the portal despite a temporary restraining order from a federal judge in June 2026, which blocked the agency from implementing Trump’s directive.
  • Logistical Chaos: Critics warn the untested portal could delay or prevent the timely delivery of mail-in ballots, effectively making mail voting impossible for many Americans.

While the Trump administration and the USPS have disputed the allegations and state the agency is "carefully reviewing" the claims, the executive order remains blocked by ongoing litigation.

A federal judge has found the plan likely unlawful, but the administration has appealed to the 1st U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, and the case may head to the Supreme Court, though whether it will be heard in time to affect the Nov. election remains to be seen.
