WASHINGTON — This week, President Donald Trump suggested he could use an executive order to eliminate mail-in ballots and voting machines, reverting exclusively to hand-counted paper ballots.
The president, who has long talked of a vote-by-mail conspiracy being involved in his losing the 2020 presidential election, issued a lengthy post on the matter on his Truth Social platform. Click here to read it in full.
Article 4, Section 1 of the United States Constitution delegates voting practices to the states.
Trump spoke on the matter again when asked about his post during a press conference with Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky, calling the practice "corrupt," while suggesting the U.S. is alone in its use of the practice.
“And do you know that we’re the only country in the world — I believe, I may be wrong — but just about the only country in the world that uses (mail-in voting) because of what’s happened, massive fraud all over the place,” Trump added when asked about the post.
Data compiled by a Sweden-based organization that advocates for democracy globally in October 2024 found that 34 countries or territories permit mail-in voting. Europe makes the broadest use of the practice.

Anti-democracy absolutely. As a disabled person I am appalled at this attempt to disenfranchise me and others like me that cannot easily physically go to polling sites, stand in long lines waiting to vote. Voting is not a privilege it is a right! I demand that my government provide a way for me to exercise my right to vote. I'll say it again, voting is my RIGHT! A true democracy would double-down to deliver on that right! I say without any doubt - Trump does not want a democracy - he wants a one-party Dictatorship with him as "Great Leader"!
