Robert "Bob" Bruce Bowling, age 78, of Bradenton, Florida, went to see Jesus on July 4, 2026, leaving behind a legacy of faith, service, and love that touched many lives.
Bob was born on May 14, 1948, in Radford, Virginia, to Mack and Ruth Bowling, who preceded him in death. He carried the values of hard work, humility, and devotion throughout his life, and those who knew him best would describe him as faith-filled, generous, and loving. His life was anchored in his Baptist faith as he was a faithful member of West Bradenton Baptist Church, and he lived in a way that reflected the grace and kindness he believed in.
Bob is survived by his wife, Elaine; his sons and daughters-in-law, Rob (Mandy), Casey (Brenda), and Matthew (Kelly). He was a proud and loving grandaddy to AnnaBelle, Lily, Brooklyn, Braden, Easton, and Charlotte, each of whom brought him great joy; as well as an older brother to his sister, Joyce (Skip) Ellis. Bob also cherished his special relationship with his uncle John Jones. His family was the center of his world, and he cherished every moment spent with them.
Bob graduated from Manatee High School in 1966, and he continued his education and athletic career at Fort Scott Community College before earning his degree from Baker University in 1973. Bob served his country as a veteran of the U.S. Army, a chapter of his life that reflected his commitment to duty and country.
After his military service, he devoted many years to coaching high school football and baseball, where he became a mentor, teacher, and encourager to countless young athletes. He coached at Miami Edison High School in Miami, Florida; Groveton High School in Groveton, Texas; Manatee High School in Bradenton, Florida; Pasco Comprehensive High School in Dade City, Florida; Mexia High School in Mexia, Texas; Palmetto High School in Palmetto, Florida; and Braden River High School in Bradenton, Florida; and he left a lasting mark at each stop along the way. His influence reached far beyond the scoreboard, because he taught young people about teamwork, character, and the importance of giving one’s best effort. His dedication to athletics and education was recognized in meaningful ways. In 2014, he was inducted into the Braden River High School Hall of Fame, and in 2026, he was inducted into the Manatee High School Hall of Honor. These honors reflected not only his success as a coach, but also the respect and admiration he earned through a lifetime of faithful leadership and service.
Bob had a great love for University of Texas athletics, and he enjoyed golf and the companionship of his many dear friends. He found joy in simple pleasures, in good conversation, and in the fellowship of those who shared his love of sports and life. He was a man who appreciated loyalty, laughter, and the blessing of lasting friendships. His life is well summed up by the words of 2 Timothy 4:7, which say, “I have fought the good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith.” Bob lived that verse with quiet strength and steadfast devotion. He met life’s challenges with courage, and he met others with warmth and sincerity. Those who loved him will remember his steady presence, his kind heart, and the example he set through the way he lived.
He was a devoted husband, father, grandaddy, brother, coach, veteran, and friend. Though he will be deeply missed, his memory will remain a blessing to all who were privileged to know him. In the comfort of his Baptist faith, his family takes peace in knowing that he is now made whole at home in the presence of the Lord he served so faithfully.
