Race Analysis: Manatee County Commission District 1

Posted

The Manatee County Commission District 1 race features Republican Liz Arnold and Democrat Sari Lindroos-Valimaki and will determine who serves the remaining two years in the seat vacated after Carol Felts' passing.

This race features two grassroots candidates, each with an attractive skill set for the seat. Both Arnold and Lindroos-Valimaki have strong records of opposing unsustainable growth patterns, protecting critical environmental resources, and demanding better practices from county government leaders.

Liz Arnold worked side by side with Felts as an activist and has attended county commission meetings for years, regularly giving public comment on issues unique to District 1. Arnold, who lives in Parrish and owns a farm in Myakka City, has a unique perspective on two major communities in the rural district. She has fought to slow rampant growth and the loss of character in Parrish while working to prevent Myakka City from suffering the same fate.

Arnold served as a director at Florida Power Corporation (now Duke Energy), managing major financial operations. Her budgeting experience would be an asset as a commissioner. Earlier, she worked with the City of St. Petersburg, helping to implement one of the first automated refuse collection systems in the country. She conducted operational reviews to improve efficiency in city departments. Her husband of 50 years was the deputy city manager. Arnold knows how government bureaucracy works as well as how it doesn’t.

Arnold emerged victorious from a crowded field of six Republicans, despite enduring an onslaught of developer-funded attack ads and facing other grassroots candidates with similar platforms. She has deep roots in the district and has earned the trust of many D1 residents.

Lindroos-Valimaki has a background in IT and cybersecurity. She has been a devoted citizen activist and also ran for the countywide District 7 seat in 2024, when Kevin Van Ostebridge was running in that district’s Republican primary. She lost to current D7 Commissioner George Kruse (who beat Van Ostenbridge in the primary) in the general election.

Lindroos-Valimaki immigrated from Finland in the 1980s and has lived in Florida for over four decades. She and her family originally lived in Palm Beach County, then moved to Bradenton years ago as overdevelopment began overtaking that community. Recognizing the pattern as it presented itself in Manatee County, she has been a vocal advocate for sustainable growth practices that will not overburden our infrastructure or degrade our environmental resources.

District 1 has now spent nearly two of the last four years without representation on the board, as Gov. Ron DeSantis failed to appoint a replacement when James Satcher resigned to become interim Supervisor of Elections in 2024 and again when Felts passed in January. Either candidate would improve the current board composition and work hard to deliver for the district’s constituents. Podcast interviews with Arnold (recorded during the primary) and Lindroos-Valimaki are available below.
