On May 19, Bradenton marks 123 years since its incorporation in 1903, and residents may notice new “America 250 / Bradenton 123” banners displayed throughout downtown and inside City Hall.
Bradenton’s story began modestly. Incorporation passed by just 59 votes to 34, transforming a riverside cluster of homes and trading posts into an official municipality. Even the City’s original name came with a mistake. A clerical error during the post office application process resulted in the spelling “Braidentown,” which was later corrected to “Bradentown.”
Then, in 1924, a local businessman stood before the Manatee River Kiwanis Club and declared the town would always feel small until it dropped the “W.” The state Legislature later approved the change and Bradenton was born, along with a motto that still fits today: The Friendly City.
Over the decades, Bradenton grew into far more than those original residents likely imagined. Bealls remains headquartered here more than 100 years after its founding, while Tropicana Products was founded in Bradenton in 1947, and its juice production facilities remain part of the community today. The Pittsburgh Pirates have trained here for generations, and destinations like the Riverwalk, Village of the Arts, and Bishop Museum of Science and Nature continue shaping the city’s identity.
As communities across the country begin recognizing the upcoming 250th anniversary of the United States, Bradenton’s 123rd birthday serves as a reminder that some of the strongest communities are not defined by size. While the City itself spans just 14.4 square miles, its character, history, and the people who continue investing in it every day have made an impact far beyond its boundaries.
