For Bradenton City Council Ward 4, TBT recommends Lisa Gonzalez Moore

Posted

During her first term on the Bradenton City Council, Lisa Gonzalez Moore proved herself to be an extremely effective representative of her constituents. Ward 4 voters should be eager to return her to the seat for four more years.

Gonzalez Moore embodies everything we want to see in an elected official. She is highly intelligent, yet humble enough to know what she doesn’t know. In a field where political courage and sound ethics are too often in short supply, she continues to ask the hard questions, even when they are unpopular. She is laser-focused on the needs of her ward and its residents, and rarely have we seen an attorney as adept at applying jurisprudence to public office.

For many years, the mayor’s office and the city manager have dominated policy-making by moving what too often seems to be a disinterested council in their preferred direction, with far too little oversight or insight offered. Whether that is because council members have lacked relevant expertise or were too willing to go along to get along, we find Gonzalez Moore’s eagerness and ability to dive into complicated and/or controversial issues facing the city, ask questions, and offer honest feedback refreshing.

We do not find Gonzalez Moore’s opponent in the race, Keith Green, anywhere near as qualified for the office. Since moving to Manatee County from Virginia in 2020, Green has attempted to insert himself in Manatee County politics, eventually getting appointed to the Bradenton Planning Commission before filing twice to run for the Manatee County Commission in 2024, without qualifying for the ballot.

Green’s positions on developer influence have seemed quite malleable, which we find most troubling. He strikes us as a man whose desire to hold public office is much stronger than any sort of coherent convictions regarding governance. We believe that Green would differ little from the rest of the council and that his election would negate the aforementioned strengths Gonzalez Moore brings to the table. While some forces would undoubtedly prefer that outcome, we believe it would represent a serious blow to Ward 4 residents.

For four years, Lisa Gonzalez Moore has proven herself to be a strong, principled, effective representative of Ward 4, where she and her family have long resided. We see no upside whatsoever in replacing her and enthusiastically recommend her for the seat.

As I have had the pleasure to personally meet with Lisa Gonzalez Moore on several occassions, I agree wholeheartedly with Bradenton Times endorsement. Ruth Lawler
