BRADENTON — Several years ago, Pat Simmons noticed Pelican stickers around New Orleans. The city was trying to drum up support for its NBA basketball franchise, formerly the Charlotte Hornets. Recalling that effort, Simmons, who suffers from a movement and communication disorder, set out to apply the same sort of awareness campaign to people with disabilities (PWD).
In that moment, Fix In '26 was born. Simmons has successfully had stickers funded and printed, and the campaign has received proclamations from the Manatee County Commission and Bradenton City Council.
The stickers are being canvassed to restaurants, businesses, government buildings, etc., asking them to pledge to make a simple fix or two within their establishment to raise awareness and be inclusive to people with disabilities. The sticker on their front window lets people with disabilities know they are welcome, included, and safe within their establishment.
Simmons has developed a 2026 strategic plan that includes not only the sticker project, but a reverse town hall with the BOCC, City Council, School Board, etc., in April to give people with disabilities a voice on issues important to them. She's planning a symposium in July with breakout sessions and keynote speakers to celebrate Disability Pride Month (the 36th Anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act). In August, she plans to focus on Disability Voting Rights. In October, a Walk 'n' Roll to raise awareness on the lack of sidewalks.
Simmons says that, for her, voicemail is the most difficult challenge, especially if using a keyboard is not an option. She stresses that PWDs often face seclusion and less than useful ableistic advice. She's hoping that by raising awareness, the entire community will consider how they can help make life more accessible for those who face challenges related to their disabilities.
