First Day Back & Big Decisions Ahead: Controlled Open Enrollment Now Open

Posted
MANATEE COUNTY — As students across Manatee County return to classrooms today after winter break, families are already planning for the next school year. The School District of Manatee County has officially opened its Controlled Open Enrollment (COE) window for the 2026–2027 school year.
COE gives families the opportunity to request enrollment in schools or programs outside their residential attendance zone. The application period runs now through Jan. 30, and requests will be considered through a lottery process—not first come, first served.
While many families will not need to take action, all are encouraged to check their residential attendance zone and explore available options.
Important Details for Families:
  • COE Window: Jan. 6–30
  • Special Provisions Available to Families:
    • Legacy Provision: Allows currently enrolled students (including VPK headed into Kindergarten in 2026) to remain at their current school through the highest grade if rezoned.
    • Founders Provision: For families who prefer their student to begin high school in the rezoned school in 2027–28.
  • School Choice: Families wishing to attend a school other than their current or rezoned school must apply during this window.
All actions—including COE, Legacy, or Founders provisions—must be completed in the FOCUS Portal by Jan. 30.
Families are also invited to attend the STEM & School Choice Showcases on Jan. 24 at 10:00 a.m. at the Bradenton Area Convention Center, where they can explore schools and programs across the district. Plus, the School District will hand out free Manatee County fair tickets will be available while supplies last.
