Stellantis has announced that Chrysler is recalling more than 320,000 Jeep plug-in hybrid vehicles due to a faulty battery that can cause a fire when it fails, U.S. traffic safety regulators said Tuesday. The company says it is aware of 19 incidents and one injury potentially related to the issue.
The vehicles include 228,221 Jeep Wranglers models from years 2020 through 2025 and 91,844 Jeep Grand Cherokees from model years 2022-2026 with batteries manufactured by Michigan-based Samsung SDI America. Owners are being advised to park the vehicles outside and away from structures until a fix for the problem has been determined and not to charge their vehicles, according to the National Highway and Traffic Safety Agency.
Interim notification letters are expected to be mailed to vehicle owners by December 2. The recall number is 68C. Owners may contact Chrysler customer service at 800-853-1403. Vehicle Identification Numbers for this recall will be searchable on NHTSA.gov beginning November 6. Even if owners' vehicles were previously recalled for the same issue, they will need to be serviced, according to the NHTSA.
