Editor’s Picks: Another half billion for the Pentagon? J6 revisions, Another ICE Shooting, and more

Posted

It was a particularly wild week in Washington, and just think about where the bar is, in terms of being able to say that right now.  Here are a few big stories we couldn't get to.

More shootings by ICE officials

Just one day after an ICE official shot an American citizen and mother of three in the head three times, a second ICE agent shooting was reported in Portland. Two people were reportedly injured. In a statement, the Department of Homeland Security said an agent fired a "defensive shot" after a driver "weaponized his vehicle."

And now, from our fiscally conservative president who vowed to reduce the debt ...

After bragging that he had been the first president to grow the military budget to $1 trillion this year, President Trump says he wants to grow it by another 50% next year. That’s right, a $1.5 trillion budget for an agency that has been unable to account for approximately $1.9 trillion of its $3.8 trillion in assets and has never passed a comprehensive financial audit since Congress mandated annual audits for all federal agencies starting in 1990. This is from a president who added $8 trillion to the national debt in his first term and is on pace to add more to the debt than any other president in U.S. history. Fiscal conservatives?

Republicans defect to pass ACA subsidy extension

The House of Representatives voted to extend Affordable Care Act premium subsidies for three years, passing the bill by a 230-196 margin. The enhanced subsidies, which had expired at the end of 2025, were critical in lowering health insurance premiums for approximately 22 million Americans. Their expiration led to skyrocketing premiums, prompting legislative action. Seventeen Republicans joined all Democrats in supporting the extension.

The party told you to reject the evidence of your eyes and ears. It was their final, most essential command.

The official White House revisionist history of the attempted insurrection on Jan. 6, 2021, is WILD! George Orwell’s 1984 has nothing on whoever came up with this retelling!

Credit where credit is do

The Trump administration says it wants to ban institutional investors such as hedge funds and private equity firms from buying residential property, arguing that people own homes, not corporations. I have been calling for this for years, as Florida is among the most adversely affected states by this practice.

After using no-interest loans from the Fed to grossly inflate asset prices across stocks, crypto, and other markets, many of these firms bought thousands of homes to rent to American families.

These profit-hungry absentee landlords are rarely responsive to tenants and often use AI and other collusion tactics to raise rents faster than the market would otherwise. This is the first rational proposal from the administration on how it might begin to address the affordability crisis ahead of the midterms.

The trump administration “says” a lot. No doubt the lobbyists will pay him enough so the “people own homes …” argument disappears in the night.

A ban in institutional investors might help the housing crisis, but I have no faith that will happen. DT is great at telling anyone what they need to hear, in order to get what he wants.
