DeSantis Announces Success Academy is Opening the First Florida Campus in Miami

Posted

TALLAHASSEE — Governor Ron DeSantis announced this week that Success Academy, a national charter school network, is opening its first charter school in Miami as part of Florida’s Schools of Hope initiative. .

“Florida leads the nation in educational freedom, and today we are adding to that promise,” said Governor DeSantis. “With Success Academy opening in Miami, students will now have access to one of the highest-performing education models in the country. Florida’s families deserve world-class education, and we will continue to make it available to every child no matter their zip code.”

Created in 2017, the School of Hope program was designed to provide students in persistently low-performing schools with a pathway to a world-class education. Hope Operators are nonprofit charter networks with a record of success serving low-income families and ensuring access to a high-quality education without barriers. The goal of the program is to close achievement gaps between low-income students and their peers.

“Under Governor DeSantis’ leadership, parents are empowered to choose the educational path that best suits their children's unique needs,” said Commissioner of Education Anastasios Kamoutsas. “Success Academy offers families another high-quality option, backed by a nationally recognized track record of academic excellence and school improvement.”

Jason Garcia's latest Seeking Rents podcast detailed the sneaky way that DeSantis and the Fl legislature pushed through language that subsidizes Success Academy and other so called Hope private schools to proliferate. These subsidies were initially intended so that private schools can be established in poor performing, low income areas. But the changes pushed through this year at the very last minute will allow these taxpayer subsidized private schools to be built anywhere, including within existing public schools. Success Academy has rules that siphon off the best, higher income students and push out low income and more difficult students.

The voucher program ultimately defunds public schools and puts money into the hands of the investors of charter schools. I don't feel public money should be used for charter schools at all.
