The month of May brings many reasons to celebrate—especially the people who serve, teach, and inspire our community. Recognizing Police Week and Peace Officers Memorial Day, we take this time to thank and honor all of our Bradenton Police Officers, both new and seasoned, who take on multiple responsibilities every day with professionalism and courage. Your service is deeply appreciated. Teacher Appreciation Week (May 5-9) and Mother’s Day also gave us special opportunities to recognize those who shape young lives.
A touching moment from a local middle school reminds us of the heart behind the profession: A beginning teacher received a handmade card from a student saying “Happy Mother’s Day” and thanking her for being their teacher. When she explained that she wasn’t a mother, the student replied, “You’re like a mother to me.” Moments like these show how much impact educators can have—often in ways they don’t expect.
May also brings new beginnings. On May 20, the City will host a groundbreaking ceremony for the new BPD headquarters. This new facility will bring modern equipment and updated technology to help reduce outdated tasks and allow officers and supervisors to focus more on public safety.
As the month closes, we prepare to observe Memorial Day—a solemn reminder to honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country. We also prepare for the arrival of summer and the end of the 2024-2025 school year. Please be extra mindful of children and teens out and about during the day.
And finally, with recent seasons still fresh in our minds, it’s time to prepare for the 2025 hurricane season. I sincerely hope you’ll take the time to prepare now.
Here’s to a meaningful end of May and, looking ahead to June—Happy Flag Day, Happy Father’s Day, and Happy Juneteenth.
