WASHINGTON — Attorney General Pam Bondi has directed federal prosecutors to launch a grand jury investigation into accusations that members of the Obama administration manipulated intelligence regarding election interference by Russia in the 2016 election.
CNN cited unnamed sources in breaking the story. Bondi has teased investigations into President Obama and members of his administration since receiving a referral from Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard. In July, Gabbard declassified documents that she alleged undermine the Obama administration’s conclusion that Russia tried to help Trump defeat Hillary Clinton.
A grand jury would give the AG's office subpoena power. Grand Jury members would consider indictments if the Justice Department decided to pursue a criminal case. The bipartisan Senate Intelligence Committee (led by then Senator and current Secretary of State Marco Rubio) found at the time that Russia had attempted to influence the outcome of the 2016 U.S. presidential election.
John Durham, a Trump-appointed U.S. attorney, was assigned to review the FBI's handling of the Russia investigation in 2019. Durham's final report criticized certain aspects of the FBI's handling of the Crossfire Hurricane investigation, although it did not recommend criminal charges.
