Kathryn Janice McCarthy, an accomplished homemaker, devoted volunteer, and beloved mother and grandmother, passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, March 27, 2024, in Bradenton, Florida, at the age of 87.

Known to her loved ones as Jan, she dedicated her life to her family and a wide circle of friends. Jan's life was a testament to her deep faith, love of books and music, and unwavering commitment to acts of kindness. Despite facing the challenge of macular degeneration later in life, which took a significant toll on her independence, Jan's spirit remained indomitable. With the support of her cherished friends and neighbors, she continued to live in her home in Country Village, a place she dearly loved.

Jan grew up in a small town in Georgia. She attended Carson-Newman College in Tennessee, where she pursued a degree in Home Economics and honed her musical talents as a member of The Melodettes, a singing trio. Her adventurous spirit led her to Washington D.C., where she met her future husband, Tom, while both were working at the Pentagon. Together, they built a life in Maryland, where they raised their three children until retiring to Bradenton. Jan's musical talent as a pianist and organist was a source of joy to many. Her passion for crafts, especially counted cross-stitch, created cherished memories for those who were gifted with her artwork. Beyond her immediate family and friends, Jan's boundless compassion found another outlet in her volunteer work with Hospice, where she offered solace and support to those in their final days, extending her legacy of kindness and empathy.

Predeceased by her husband, Thomas F. McCarthy, Jr., in 2008, Jan was a devout member of Saints Peter and Paul the Apostles Catholic Church. She leaves behind a loving family: her daughter, Denise and husband Michael Bucklin of Los Angeles, California; son, Thomas F. McCarthy, III, of Zephyrhills, Florida; daughter, Katie and her husband Paul Freas, along with two cherished grandchildren, Alexandra Padley and Wyatt Freas, all of Phoenix, Maryland; and her sister-in-law, Nancy McCarthy of Yonkers, New York. Jan was also eagerly anticipating the arrival of her first great-grandchild this October. Her loss will be deeply felt by her family, friends, and all who knew her.

A memorial service to celebrate Jan's life and legacy will be announced at a later date. Brown & Sons Funeral Homes & Crematory 43rd Street Chapel, 604 43rd Street West, Bradenton, FL 34209, is in charge of arrangements.
