Clarence Mumford

It is with deep sadness our family shares this announcement that Clarence Allen Mumford, 81, of Parrish Florida, passed away suddenly, December 8, 2023.

The son of Clarence Alton Mumford and Jewell Godfrey Mumford, Allen was born September 19,1942 in Gary, Indiana. After graduating from high school in Indiana, Allen attended Indiana University for 2 years and then joined the United States Marine Corps in 1963, reporting to Pensacola, Florida. Allen participated in the MARCAD Flight Training program and was commissioned 2nd Lieutenant and received his wings in 1965. Leaving Pensacola, Allen reported to Camp Pendleton to squadron VMO-6 to begin training and qualification for the UH-1E (Huey Helicopter).

In June of 1966, Allen reported to Vietnam and was assigned to the VMO-2 squadron to fly Huey Gunships. During his tour in Vietnam,

Al received 31 Air Medals and was awarded The Distinguish Flying Cross.

After leaving the Marine Corps, Allen graduated from Ball State University and received his Law Degree from Valparaiso University. In 1969 Allen became a commercial pilot with United Airlines. During his 33 years at United, Allen flew the B-737, B-727, DC10, B-767 and retired on the B-747. After Al's retirement from United, he was a contract flight instructor for Boeing in Seattle and Miami for 11 years.

Allen prioritized his family all of his life. He also enjoyed scuba diving, hiking and motorcycle riding . Allen was able to accomplish his goal of riding in all 48 states. Allen also had a passion for traveling extensively throughout the 7 continents of the world. Allen had another passion for reading. He could always be found with a book in his hand, keeping up with economic issues and politics. At cocktail time, Al and Jann enjoyed a Manhattan each evening discussing all the daily events!

Allen is survived by his best friend and loving wife, Jann Stegenga Mumford, a former Flight Attendant for United Airlines. Allen and Jann were married in 1974. Together they have two children: Clarence Adam Mumford and Claire Allison Mumford. Allen is also survived by two grandchildren, Charlotte and William, they both became one of his greatest joys in his life.

Allen will be laid to rest at the Sarasota National Cemetery, Sarasota, Florida.
