Incumbent Vern Buchanan won the district in rematch election with Christine Jennings this year by 24%. In 2006, iVotronics - the controversial electronic voting machine - was blamed for Christine's loss. This year the machine was put to rest as Florida returned to the paper ballot system. Congressman Buchanan's win can now dispel the rumors of a problem election in 2006.
Buchanan's legislative accomplishments include: fighting for compensation for Florida tomato growers and packers for millions of dollars in losses associated with the recent salmonella scare; helping pass the American Family Housing Rescue and Foreclosure Prevention Act to extend Federal Housing Administration loan; introducing a bill to expand and improve Federal gang prevention programs; the SBA Veterans' Programs Act of 2007 to reauthorize the veterans entrepreneurial development programs of the Small Business Administration; and co-sponsoring a bill supporting the observance of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
Representative Buchanan was appointed to serve on the powerful Transportation Committee and has used his position to help our area get back our fair share of gas taxes. The "Equalizer" as he calls himself deserves credit for his focus to solve our transportation challenges.
