Betty Valley Mills, 85, passed away on March 2, 2012. She was born on May 24, 1926, in Detroit, MI to the late Rudolph & Blanche (Beers) Carlson. She grew up in Detroit, and graduated from the University of Michigan where she received a Bachelor of Arts with a degree in English. She moved to Florida in 1970 and resided in Holmes Beach.
Betty was predeceased by two husbands; Ray Valley, who passed away in 1977, and W. Thomas Mills, Jr., who passed away in 2006. She had one brother; Jack Carlson, who passed away in 2007. She is survived by her four children; Linda (Louis) Cooper of New Richmond, WI, Charles (Gale) Valley of Sarasota, Edward (Jane) Valley, and Kathleen Valley, both of Bradenton. She has one granddaughter; Jennifer (Bruce) Gilmour, and one great- granddaughter; Kiana Gilmour. She has two nieces and two nephews; Chris (Mike) Bos of Holland, MI, Mark Carlson of Sedona, AZ, Kelly (Tom) Norris, and Jack W. Carlson, both of Marathon, FL. She has four step children; Nancy (Dan) Crabbe of Locust, NJ, Sally (Monty) Robson of Bonita Springs, FL, Robert (Sue) Karn III of St. Louis, MO, and Suzanne Simonds of Kamuela, HI. She is also survived by many step grandchildren and step great-grandchildren.
Betty was a member of Roser Memorial Church, and a volunteer for their Women’s Guild. She was a past member of the Bradenton Yacht Club. Betty was an avid and skillful bridge player. Most importantly, Betty was a good friend to so many and was loved by all who knew her. She was truly a wonderful woman, and will be greatly missed by all.
Memorial services will be held at 3 P.M. on Wednesday, March 14, 2012 at Shannon Funeral Home Westview Chapel, 5610 Manatee Avenue W., Bradenton. Memorial offerings may be made to either The American Cancer Society or Sunny Bower Assisted Living Facility.
