Obituary:

Sue Turner Maddox, 80, Cortez, passed away March 1, 2013. Sue, the granddaughter of Capt. Nathan Fulford who was one of the founders of the town of Cortez, was born on March 3, 1932 in Mulberry, FL to the late Christopher C. and Myrtle (Fulford) Turner. She grew up in the Mulberry area, and lived there until 1965 when she moved to Manatee County. While living in Mulberry, Sue and her late husband R.C. Dick Maddox owned and operated the Humpty Dumpty Restaurant in Mulberry until the mid 1960's. While residing in Manatee County Sue worked as a bookkeeper with A.P. Bell Fish Company in Cortez, as waitress with Moore's Stone Crab Restaurant, and many other local businesses. Sue was a long time advocate for the Cortez fishing village, and was a member of the Island Democratic Club where she served as the Treasurer. She was also active within The Florida Institute of Salt Water Heritage, served as a Docent at The Florida Maritime Museum at Cortez, served as an usher with the Asolo Repository Theatre, volunteered as a Guardian Ad Litem for many years, and also donated her time as a reading assistant at the Anna Maria Elementary School. She was predeceased by a sister, Martha T. Osborne, and is survived by her two loving sons and their wives: Richard and Annette of Cortez, Michael and Paula of Terra Ceia, her brother and his wife, Christopher "Skeet" and Kitty Turner of St. Petersburg, sister, Betty Lou Turner of Bradenton, five dear grandchildren, Crystal, Cassie, Karla,Tres, and Christopher, and a nephew Chris Osborne whom she raised, and his two children as grandchildren. 



Funeral Information:

The family will receive friends for a memorial to remember and celebrate her life on Saturday, March 16, 2013 from 1-3 P.M. at the Swordfish Grill Restaurant in Cortez. The family requests that in lieu of flowers that memorials be made to: Florida Institute of Saltwater Heritage, Florida Maritime Museum, or the Island Democratic Club in her memory.
