Father Richard Thompson

Obituary:
Father Richard Raymond Thompson, son of the late Raymond Charles Thompson and Viola Agnes Gerthoffer Thompson, went to his eternal reward with the Lord, on Wednesday, January 8, 2014, at the Westminster Towers Health Facility, Bradenton, Florida, where he has been a resident for the past six years. Born on August 28, 1933, in Syracuse, New York, Father Thompson graduated from St. Anthony's School in Syracuse and St. Bernard's Seminary in Rochester, New York. He was ordained a priest on February 2, 1959 by Bishop Walter A. Foery at Blessed Sacrament Church, 3127 James St., in Syracuse.  At that time the Cathedral was being renovated. Father Thompson served as Assistant Pastor at St. Mary's Church in Cortland, Blessed Sacrament Church, Johnson City and St. Paul's Church, Binghamton.  
In 1972 he was appointed as pastor of St. Ann's Church, Parish, where he served for six years. He also served as pastor of St. Joseph's Church, Booneville for 14 years and Holy Family Church, Fulton for 12 years. Upon retiring Father Thompson moved to Bradenton, Florida, where he served at Our Lady Queen of Martyrs Catholic Church ,Sarasota, for five years before entering Westminster Towers Health Facility.  He also served several years on the  Syracuse Diocese priests Presbyteral Council and part time on the Diocesan Marriage Tribunal.
While pastor in Fulton he served as the Bishop's Vicar for the Northern Region of the Diocese. Father Thompson was a 4thDegree member and Faithful Friar of the Knights of Columbus both in Syracuse and in Sarasota. He served as chaplain to the Fire Departments in Parish, Booneville and Fulton. Father Thompson was totally devoted to his priesthood and served his people with great compassion and love. He is survived by his brother, David Thompson of Kansas City, Missouri, and his sister, Sister Serena Thompson, C.S.J. of Troy, New York. 


Funeral Information:

Arrangements have been entrusted to Brown & Sons Funeral Homes & Crematory 26th Street Chapel, 26thStreet West, Bradenton. There will be no calling hours. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated, Thursday, January 16, 2014, 11:00AM, at Our Lady Queen of Martyrs Catholic Church, 833 Magellan Drive, Sarasota, Florida. Interment of his ashes will be in the Memorial Gardens on the grounds of Our Lady Queen of Martyrs Catholic Church. Condolences to www.brownandsonsfuneral.com.
