The family of Melvin William Griffin is saddened to announce his passing at Sarasota Memorial Hospital on March 29, 2014. Born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, Mel served as the President and CEO of the Seagram Corporation, Canada and then as the Executive Vice-President, Manufacturing for Seagram International, based in New York City. Upon his retirement in 1987, the Griffins moved to Bradenton where he has resided since. He was an active and competitive member of the El Conquistador (IMG) Golf Club and enjoyed many years of golfing, bridge and poker with many friends over the years.
In addition, Mel also believed in giving back to his community, serving on many Boards and contributing generously of his time, energy and finances. Mel ‘s commitment to the Manatee County community was recognized in February 2014 when he and his wife, Kathy were awarded the Spirit of Manatee Awards for “Lifetime Spirit” based on the significant contributions and service to the Salvation Army, the United Way Foundation and the Easter Seals of Southwest Florida. Mel was predeceased by his first wife, Colleen and his first born son, Patrick (Francoise).
Left to mourn him and miss his wisdom, good humor , love and support are his wife, Kathy, her daughter, Roberta (Michael), his children, Lorna (Roger), Richard (Debbie), Bruce, David (Elisa) and his grandchildren, Matthew (Vanessa), Kelly, Shannon, Patrick, Paolo, Paloma, Matthew and Meghan.
Memorial Service 12 Noon, Wednesday April 2, 2014 at Ss Peter & Paul the Apostles Catholic Church. Brown & Sons Funeral Homes & Crematory 26th Street Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
