Obituary:

Jonas Evan McKenzie, 92, of Alpine Lake, WV & Bradenton, FL, died Sunday, July 29, 2012 at home on Alpine Lake. Jonas was born January 24, 1920 in Frostburg, the son of the late Oscar and Bessie McKenzie. He was a member of St. Peter the Apostle Catholic Church in Oakland and was an usher at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Bradenton, FL. He was a U.S. Navy veteran having served during WWII. Jonas was retired from the U.S. Postal Service as a carrier with more than 30 years of service and in his retirement became an avid golfer. He was past president of Northern High School PTA and was instrumental in raising money for the football program. Jonas was a fiercely patriotic American with 67 years of continuous service to the American Legion. He served as past Commander in Grantville, was District Commander and member of Post 71, Oakland. He participated in many State and National Conventions and traveled abroad to visit top secret military sites. He also hosted a golf outing for 15 years at the Alpine Lake Golf Course to benefit the State and National Legionnaires, was a member of Grantsville Rotary and a founder and charter president of the Grantsville Lions. He is survived by his wife, Betty (Bittinger) McKenzie; two daughters, Patricia Schroyer of Grantsville; Theresa Smith and husband Dan of Hockessin, DE; a son, James McKenzie and Sharon of Medford, OR; two stepdaughters, Michele Carl of Greensburg, PA; Lisa Brenneman and husband Steve of Oakland; a stepson, Paul Roderick and wife Janet of Swanton; nine grandchildren, six step grandchildren; eighteen great grandchildren, two step great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Blanche Miller and Myrtle Bridges; four brothers, Marsh, Cobey, Wilbert and Martin McKenzie. At his request he was cremated.



Funeral Information:

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, August 3 at St. Peter the Apostle Catholic Church, 208 South Fourth Street, Oakland at 10 A.M. with Monsignor Paul A. Byrnes as celebrant. Interment will follow in Garrett County Memorial Gardens, Oakland with military honors.
