On Wednesday, high school athletes from all over the country signed letters of intent to accept scholarships to play college football in an event known as National Signing Day. In football-rich Manatee County, it's becoming a regular tradition as multiple schools hold media events to announce their athletes' decisions.

Hollywood couldn't script a better beginning to the story. A boxer, China “the Dragon” Smith, who begins a comeback in the eponymous year of the Chinese zodiac. 2012 is indeed the Year of the Dragon, and the local heavyweight is hoping it will mark the renaissance of his once-promising career as a prizefighter, complete with a Hollywood ending that sees him on top of the division.

It was a frantic finish at Quantum Key West 2012 as several boats snatched victory with strong performances on the fifth and final day. Barking Mad pulled off one of the greatest comebacks in the 25-year history of the regatta, winning the Farr 40 class despite suffering a dreaded DNF. Barking Mad, skippered by Jim Richardson of Newport, R.I., did not finish Race 2 after a scary man overboard incident.

With three races conducted in strong winds, there was opportunity for boats to make a significant move in the standings on the second day of Quantum Key West 2012. Or in some cases it was a chance to further increase leads taken on Day one. Pisces fit into the former category, moving into the overall lead in Melges 32 class by winning two of three races on Tuesday. Skipper Benjamin Schwartz and company showed superb boat speed and made some sound tactical decisions and now lead the 19-boat fleet by tiebreaker over John Kilroy and the Samba Pa Ti team. more»

Quantum Key West 2012 got off to a roaring start as strong breeze and sunny skies greeted the fleet of 112 boats in 12 classes. Northeast winds that started off at 15 knots and built to 20-plus challenged crews on Sunday, the opening day of the 25th anniversary regatta, organized by Premiere Racing.

The Manatee High Hurricanes won their 5th Florida State Football Championship last Friday night at the Citrus Bowl in Orlando, crushing Jacksonville's First Coast Buccaneers 40-0. On any given day, one can see fans or alumni donning their favorite sports team on a t-shirt or ball cap. State universities have historically benefited greatly by marketing their multi-million dollar sports programs through events, television rights and apparel licensing. However, many of the apparel companies are located out of state and in some cases -- out of the country. Ironically, some of the hats and t-shirts advertising all-American home teams are being created in foreign sweatshops. more»

Registration has begun for the 23rd Annual Gulf Coast Senior Games, a series of athletic competitions held in Manatee and Sarasota counties from Feb. 21 - 26, 2012. Each year more than 400 athletes ages 50 and over compete in the Gulf Coast Senior Games. It is one of 19 regional qualifying events across Florida which determine participants in the statewide Senior Games which will be held next December in Polk County. more»
