Sarasota's Anthony Campi looked like he was in cruise for most of Saturday night's 75-lap Turner Tree and Landscape Super Late Model feature event at Desoto Speedway. But a disastrous turn of events over the final nine laps that included a spin with a lapped car and a classic short track-bump-and-run with Jeff Scofield left Campi disappointed as he sat and watched Scofield celebrate his second Desoto win of the year.

The Tampa Bay Rowdies fell 2-0 to Ottawa Fury FC on a frustrating Saturday night at Al Lang Stadium. The Rowdies’ ultra-offensive lineup pressured Ottawa goalkeeper Romuald Peiser for much of the night, but couldn’t find a way onto the scoresheet. Oliver’s 25th minute goal and Sinisa Ubiparipovic’s stoppage time insurance goal earned all three points for Ottawa.

State College of Florida, Manatee-Sarasota athletic teams and student-athletes were recently recognized by the National Junior College Athletic Association for their academic achievements in 2013-2014. SCF Manatees men's baseball and women's volleyball, softball and tennis teams were named 2013-2014 NJCAA All-Academic Teams. SCF teams exceeded the minimum team grade-point average (GPA) of 3.0 required for the honor.

State College of Florida, Manatee-Sarasota has named Mandy Schuerman as the head coach of the SCF Manatees women’s softball team. The former University of Florida standout will assume her position next week.

The Fort Myers Miracles advanced to the Florida State League Championship Series with a 6-2 win over the Bradenton Marauders on Wednesday night at JetBlue Park. The Miracle erased a 1-0 deficit by plating six runs in the bottom of the third inning. Fort Myers swept the best two-of-three series and advances to play in the final round for the first time since 2008.

The Marauders dropped the first game of the Florida State League South Division Series on Tuesday night at McKechnie Field 8-7 against the Fort Myers Miracle. Bradenton scored seven runs in the bottom of the second inning but did not score against as the Miracle rallied for the final five runs of the game. The Marauders must beat the Miracle on Wednesday in Fort Myers to extend the series to a decisive third game.

Among the games this Friday: St. Stephen's Episcopal Falcons will travel to Seffner Christian after shutting out Bishop McLaughlin Catholic by 42 points last week. On the heels of a 23-7 stunner that featured a late-game comeback win by Ware County, the Manatee Hurricanes will play their home opener against Sanford's Seminole High. The Palmetto Tigers will host St. Pete's Lakewood Spartans after losing 46-44 to Venice in their first game.
