One would have to guess what the County Commissioners think about sexually oriented businesses, but this much is clear - they know where they don't want them. Thursday's vote to amend the Land Development Code, repealing all adult entertainment-related definitions in it, leaves one sexually-oriented business challenged.

Manatee County Utilities Department advises reclaimed water users that low pressure will be experienced until further notice due to a lack of rain and heavy demand from our customers. We are working with our large users to balance the system demand allowing the Utilities Department to provide service with the limited quantity of water available.

As they plan how to spend this year’s $1.9 million Community Development Block Grant (CDBG), within the eligible areas of Manatee County, Neighborhood Services Department officials are looking for more community input than ever. Manatee County will host four community meetings to ask residents how they would like to see the money spent to improve their neighborhoods.

The Manatee Board of County Commissioners elected officers to the BOCC, Port Authority, Civic Center Authority, Community Redevelopment Agency and Tourist Development Council for the year of 2012 at Tuesday's meeting. Commissioner John Chappie will be the new BOCC chair.

Jails, like all buildings, require maintenance, and the Manatee County Jail has been waiting to be updated with current equipment and hardware for too long. Much of the work has been done, but some of the original components and technology are still in the 1995 facility today. The Sheriff and Property Management heads sat down with the BOCC on Tuesday to see what they could do about it.

The Manatee County Port Authority has hired Carlos Buqueras as Port Manatee's new executive director, but his contract was not without a few fireworks. Port Authority board members sparred over a deferred compensation package designed to boost pay, before eventually passing it 6-1. On January 2, 2012 the port veteran takes the helm of Florida's newly-improved, ever-growing international gateway.

The Manatee County Port Authority has a new Director: Carlos Buqueras. Set to start Jan. 2, 2012, he will have a brand new clean machine that is being built and tuned to take the port into a future of international trade far beyond its present status. The Green Express is getting in gear and will be ready to go to points North as soon as August, 2012.

Port Manatee is growing up. It will be known as Florida's International Gateway. It is getting a new sea wall, newly dredged berths and basin, as well as a new Port Director. They are connecting direct routes in from the new Panama Canal, and railing and trucking product out to states like Indiana. A big piece of that operation will be; the Green Express Project.
