Jeffrey Bliss and Detective Scott Williamson are awarded Deputy of the Month for January 2012 after their quick action helped to save a cardiac arrest victim's life. Collin Haught assisted deputies in tracking down a suspect who escaped while in custody and was temporarily on the loose in the MCSO Operations Center. For his actions, he was awarded Employee of the Month.

Officer Jason Nuttall has been selected to receive the Bradenton Police Department’s Officer of the Month award for February 2012 for singlehandedly arresting three thieves and thwarting two burglaries in a matter of days.

Captain Paul Ewers is retiring Friday after 25 years with the Bradenton Fire Department. Ewers will continue his role as the department’s chaplain. In February, he will be ordained as a pastor at Kingdom Life Christian Church. Capt. Ewers joined the Bradenton Fire Department in 1987 to experience firsthand the rewards and challenges of the fire service.

Richard Rucker, 52 Bradenton, was walking his dog a few blocks west of the IHOP on U.S. 41 in Bradenton when a pit bull that had been chained to a tree at a domestic residence broke free and charged him, according to a report from the Manatee County Sheriff's Office. The pit reportedly began attacking Rucker's dog before coming toward him.

Four MCSO employees were honored with prestigious awards at the annual Sheriff’s Awards Luncheon this past Friday at the Renaissance on 9th in Bradenton. Categories included: Deputy of the Year, Employee of the year, the Beall's Humanitarian Award and the Robert Molter Memorial Volunteer Award.

On Halloween of this year, a child nearly died choking on a piece of candy when a strobe light exacerbated a post-concussion seizure that resulted from an injury at wrestling practice earlier that night. Detective Levita's quick thinking helped avert a tragedy and for his actions, he has been named MCSO's Deputy of the Year.

After nearly 31 years, Battalion Chief Garry Lawson has worked his last shift with the fire department. Garry joined the department in Dec. 1980. When he was 10 years old, he and his family experienced a fire in their home, and the BFD was quick to respond. That experience was the driving force behind his desire to fight fire.

For the fourth consecutive year the Bradenton Police Department is partnering with Kingdom Life Christian Church to buy Christmas toys for local children who may not get any presents otherwise. But this special program - Honoring the Badge - isn’t just about giving children toys. It’s also about giving them the opportunity to meet the police officers who patrol their neighborhoods and the knowledge that police officers are their friends. It also helps instill in them the noble act of giving and helping others who are in need.
