The federal government shutdown may impact people’s outdoor recreation plans in Florida if they are destined for federal parks and wildlife refuges. The Fall Classic Fishing Tournament to benefit Sarasota Christian School takes place Oct. 4-5. The red fish, snook and trout catch-and-release tourney awards a number of prizes. Authorities are encouraging diving enthusiasts to catch non-native lionfish if they see them roaming around area reefs.

The recreational harvest of red snapper opens Oct. 1 in state and federal waters of the Gulf of Mexico. Our contributing captain recommends catch and release snook fishing before daylight and then looking for reds, trout, blues, Spanish mackerel and more in Sarasota Bay. An area of low pressure may move out of the Caribbean into the Gulf after Wednesday. Mariners should monitor the latest forecasts for updates concerning this system.

Due to an increased number of tubing incidents, the FWC is reminding people about tubing safety. Our contributing captain Rick Grassett says anglers can beat the heat by catch and release snook fishing before daylight and then look for reds, trout, blues, Spanish mackerel, tripletail and more in Sarasota Bay. Reds are schooling in Sarasota Bay. Look for nervous patches of water or large wakes to find them.

Governor Rick Scott  announced that he will be adding four additional license-free fishing days. A  supplemental recreational red snapper harvest has been eliminated, as well as a closure for several grouper species in Gulf waters, providing anglers with additional fishing opportunities.

They have also passed two new measures for catching tarpon: anglers can no longer snag a tarpon in its body, nor use a weight that hangs lower than their hook when fishing for them. Capt. Rick Grassett says action in the coastal gulf is about to get hot! Baitfish are becoming plentiful and predators will be close behind them. Reds are schooling in Sarasota Bay.

This weekend is the Tampa Boatshow! According to our contributing captain, Rick Grasset, tarpon and bonefish will become catch and release only for the first time. If you can dodge the afternoon thunderstorms, you can still target tarpon are also a good option around bridges at night and juveniles in creeks, canals and basins. Beat the heat by catch and release snook fishing before daylight in the ICW and then look for trout, blues, Spanish mackerel, tripletail and more in Sarasota Bay.

The first of month brought about many changes in recreational fishing. For the first time in three years, snook season opened. However, tarpon and bonefish became catch and release only for the first time. Our contributing Captain Rick Grassett says that reds are schooling in Sarasota Bay. He recommends looking  for nervous patches of water or large wakes to find them.
