Tarpon fishing should be good next week as we head away from a full moon. Our contributing captain Rick Grassett recommends looking for reds, snook and big trout on shallow flats or edges of bars in Sarasota Bay. He says fishing deep grass flats for trout, blues, flounder and more should also be a good option.

Tarpon season is here! Tarpon are becoming plentiful in the coastal Gulf, according to our contributing captain, Rick Grassett. In addition to tarpon, false albacore and tripletail may also be options there depending on conditions. Grassett recommends looking for reds, snook and big trout on shallow flats or edges of bars in Sarasota Bay. Fishing deep grass flats for trout, blues, and flounder.

Alas, the end of stone crab season is near! If you haven't had your fix, be sure to eat a batch before Friday. The Seventh Annual Fire Charity Fishing tournament will take place on Sunday, June 6-8 at the Bradenton Yacht Club. Tarpon season is upon us so get out there and catch your own version of a white whale.

Goblin sharks, lionfish and stone crabs were all highlights of the fishing world this week. Weather underground predicts high pressure will influence the weather through the remainder of the week and into the upcoming weekend. Winds will remain out of the east to southeast across the Gulf waters through the weekend.

Gulf snook season closed on May 1. FWC approved new a sea cucumber and lionfish management plan. Red snapper season has been set for May 24 through July 15. A broad area of high pressure in the central Gulf of Mexico will gradually push east and will be over the Florida Peninsula on Tuesday. The high will move east of Florida Wednesday with winds veering east to southeast across the waters through the end of the week.

A cold front will settle over the region on Thursday and remain in place through Saturday. The front will move southeast of the waters on Sunday as high pressure builds in from the northwest.

A cold front will approach from the northwest late in the week.

Across Florida there are signs that spring has sprung, from the fine layer of yellow pollen coating everything in the north to folks returning to the water sans wetsuit in the south. Warmer water also means the return of Spanish mackerel, a feisty fish that migrates south when the water temperature dips below 70 and should be returning to north Florida waters right about now.
