Amberjack and gray triggerfish season reopened Aug 1 in Gulf state waters. A front will come in from the north but winds and seas are expected to remain below headline criteria. Capt. Rick Grassett recommends looking for reds and big trout on shallow flats or edges of bars early during the the day. He says catch and release snook fishing should also be good in passes and around docks and bridges close to passes.

Spiny lobster season began with a two day recreational event July 30-31, followed by the commercial/recreation season which runs Aug. 6 through March 31. A recreational fishing workshop on Gulf red snapper will be held in St. Petersburg on August 11. Find out how you can chime in! A cold front will bring scattered thunderstorms and inland chop to the area over the weekend.

Weather Underground is predicting a weak high pressure will remain over the waters through the forecast period keeping winds light and seas on the low side outside of any thunderstormsCaptain Rick Grassett says you should find trout, blues and more on deep grass flats of Sarasota Bay. Look for reds and big trout on shallow flats or edges of bars early in the day. Catch and release snook fishing should also be good in passes and around docks and bridges close to passes.

Gulf recreational red snapper season closes July 15 in state waters. Weather Underground is predicting gusty winds Monday-Thursday. Captain Rick Grassett says tarpon fishing will remain strong next week as we head away from a full moon. Tarpon schools will break up after spawning then will return to the beach as singles, doubles and smaller schools that are ready to eat!

A ridge of high pressure is forecast to remain over the waters through Friday producing light winds less than 10 knots and light seas. This high will move northward on Saturday causing the winds to shift to an east southeast direction but will still remain below 15 knots. Catch and release snook in passes and around docks and bridges close to passes. You should find reds and big trout on shallow flats or edges of bars in Sarasota Bay or fish deep grass flats for trout, blues and more.

High pressure will ridge across the coastal waters through the end of the week. This will keep an east to southeast wind flow in place with light seas.
