The Gulf temperature is on the rise and fishing has never been better. A weak disturbance aloft will bring increasing chances for showers and thunderstorms both today and Friday. A more typical summer thunderstorm pattern will return to the area over the weekend.

The FWC is working to streamline saltwater rules in Manatee County. Catch and release snook fishing should also be good in passes and around docks and bridges close to passes. Look for reds and big trout on shallow flats or edges of bars in Sarasota Bay or fish deep grass flats for trout, blues and more. An afternoon sea breeze will develop each day this week, winds and seas will be locally higher in and around any storms over the water.

The FWC is requesting help locating several species of rare birds including, southeastern American kestrels, burrowing owls and painted buntings. The FWC is also holding regional workshops to inform local governments on ways to protect gopher tortoises. Tarpon fishing should be good next week as we head away from a full moon. Catch and release snook fishing should be good in the surf, in passes and around docks and bridges close to passes.

Agenda topics  include: marine fisheries management, lionfish management and the Gulf Reef Fish Data Reporting System. Sea cucumber management takes effect June 11. Surface high pressure over the western Atlantic with a ridge axis extending across the central Florida Peninsula and eastern Gulf of Mexico will hold over the region through mid-week then gradually sink south late in the week with increasing onshore flow. Winds will remain less than 15 knots with seas less than 3 feet through the period. Main hazard each day will be isolated thunderstorms which will produce locally gusty winds and rough seas.

The annual Fire Charity Fishing Tournament is this weekend! Four men were rescued off the coast of Anna Maria Sunday. Sea cucumber management takes effect June 11. Weather Underground reports high pressure will bring light winds and waves to the waters through Monday. There is a chance of thunderstorms but conditions will remain well below headline criteria with winds generally 10 knots or less and waves less than one foot.

Conservation-based Apalachicola oyster harvest changes became effective June 1. The FWC released a new lionfish mobile application. The harvest of amberjack and grey triggerfish closed June 1. Weather Underground is predicting afternoon showers and thunderstorms all week.

The FWC launched a new lionfish app yesterday. The recreational harvest of greater amberjack and gray triggerfish in Gulf closes June 1—Aug. 1. Weather Underground is predicting afternoon thunderstorms and 10-15 knot winds for the rest of the week.

Sixty-two people lost their lives in Florida last year in boating accidents, and there have already been 11 deaths so far this year, according to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. Tarpon fishing should be good next week as we head away from a full moon. Our contributing captain Rick Grassett recommends looking for reds, snook and big trout on shallow flats or edges of bars in Sarasota Bay. He says fishing deep grass flats for trout, blues, flounder and more should also be a good option.
