During 2013, a preliminary total of 829 manatee deaths were documented. St. Johns River blue crab trap closure starts Jan. 16. This weekend, a high pressure will move across the state Friday, then move to the Atlantic during the weekend as a cold front approaches. There may be periods of small exercise caution conditions during the next couple of days with advisory conditions possible over the weekend.

Several species of grouper closed to recreational and commercial harvest starting Jan. 1 in Florida state waters of the Atlantic. A strong cold front will move into the northern Gulf waters early Monday morning and pass south of Florida by Monday night. Northwest winds with gusts to near gale force will develop over the Gulf waters behind the front. Our contributing captain reccommends fishing deep grass flats of Sarasota Bay for trout, Spanish mackerel, blues and more should be a good option next week.

A warm front on Thursday will be followed by a cold front over the weekend. Our contributing Capt. Rick Grassett recommends fishing deep grass flats of Sarasota Bay for trout, blues and more. Looking for false albacore and tripletail in the coastal gulf when conditions are good should also be a good option next week.

Several species of grouper will close to recreational and commercial harvest starting Jan. 1 in Florida state waters of the Atlantic. There is a FWC buoy in Tampa Bay to aid water quality and harmful algal bloom monitoring. A cold front exits into South Florida waters tonight then stalls as high pressure works west across the Gulf through mid-week. This high pressure gets reinforced from the north toward the end of the week.

The FWC no longer requires anglers to carry a venting tool when fishing for reef fish -- they are leaving it up to the fisherman to determine the best way to release the fish unharmed. Gag grouper is closed for recreational harvest in most Gulf of Mexico state waters as of Dec. 4, with the last day of harvest being Dec. 3.
