The Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show is this weekend along with the Fall Fly Fishing Challenge and the opening of Marine Quest in St. Petersburg. There are no reports of red tide off Sarasota beaches from Venice north at this time. Fishing for false albacore, Spanish mackerel, tripletail and more in the coastal gulf should continue to get better as the water cools and baitfish schools become more concentrated. Shallow water fishing for reds, trout and snook should also continue to improve as it gets cooler.

Five Adult Division Teams and 3 Junior Division Teams competed in the 5th Annual Gullett Mullet Invitational Tournament, culminating in an old-fashioned fish fry at the Palmetto Point Civic Association last Saturday. Proceeds from the fish fry benefited the Manatee-Sarasota Fish and Game Association’s outdoor activities for kids, such as the Jerry Hill Memorial Kids’ Fishing Tournament.

Stone crab season is finally here! It is my favorite season because not only are the crabs delicious, but they are a renewable fishery. The Fall Fly Fishing Challenge will be held next weekend. Fishing for false albacore (little tunny), Spanish mackerel, tripletail and more in the coastal gulf should continue to get better as the water cools and baitfish schools become more concentrated. Shallow water fishing for reds, trout and snook should also continue to improve as it gets cooler. Tonight's new moon should bring some of the best fishing of the month!
