BOCC Land Use Agenda Results: September 4, 2014

BRADENTON — At Thursday's Land Use Meeting, two projects dominated what may have been the largest agenda the BOCC has been presented, at least in recent years. Wetland mitigation for the land the Ft. Hamer bridge is being built on was the first, and a 2.75 mile sidewalk for the Village of Amazon South project on Moccasin Wallow Road and U.S. 301 was the other.

Item #9 of Consent Agenda -- Commissioner DiSabatino asked to pull the item for discussion. DiSabatino asked about the the additional cost and why the Tampa Bay Mitigation Bank played into the mix. -- Approved, Unanimous  (Story to follow)

 

CITIZEN COMMENTS -- 

 

Barbara Hines spoke on item #9. She said it was "appalling"  that the issue was on the consent agenda. Hines said, "Mitigation banks don't work and never have worked," adding, "If you destroy the environment it remains destroyed." 

Hines told the commission that they should keep contested issues out of the consent agenda and give the public the information and time to know what is going on.

 

Mary Shepard said she has attended all of the "Ft Hamer" meetings and was under the impression that the people didn't want it and thought it was voted down. "In the 70s someone put a little bitty line where people fish, it was a straight shot," Shepard said, then added, "Now it's worst then it ever was. The value of the marsh is the renewal of fish."

Pat Neal announced how excited he was about the project, boasted about how it wasn't a typical Neal Community. He said it is an All-American community, adding that it would have every size, shape of house and activity it would take to be first rate.

 

But there was a stickler that tripped into an hour and a half struggle over allowing Neal to NOT build the required sidewalks. Neal said he would put the money in a sidewalk fund to allow other parts of town to finish the sidewalks that needed to be finished now. 

 

It just took 90 minutes to figure out that Neal would come out a million dollars on top, if the county took the hook. --  Approved, Unanimous (full story)

Thank you Commissioner DiSabatino for refusing to let fellow commission members and certain county staff continue to hide yet another controversial development decision from public view--this time after ignoring the factual input of environmental scientists and the public, supposedly served by our elected officials. Too bad the commission majority continues to serve themselves and their "friends" at public expense. Vote for Terri Wonder and hopefully more like her in 2016.
