Doctor of Business Administration Degree Now Offered at USF

Published Saturday, July 26, 2014 12:03 am

BRADENTON -- The University of South Florida College of Business is now taking applications for its new Doctor of Business Administration (DBA) degree program. Set to begin at the start of next year, this program is designed for upper-level industry executives who wish to further their education in the managerial field. Students will participate in both traditional and advanced classroom studies, as well as online courses, real-world industry studies and in-depth research within their own companies.

The Doctor of Business Administration differs sharply from the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Business Administration and the Master of Business (MBA) degrees, both of which are more commonly known. Rather than focusing on research-based studies and/or studies for less experienced executives, the DBA is intended to provide top-level businessmen and women the highest level of education possible. The goal is to provide more and better ways for executives to tackle managerial problems they may face within their careers.

“The USF DBA combines face-to-face and online learning in its curriculum that equips executives with advanced skills to better address the vexing problems that face organizations, to lead change initiatives and to transform business practice,” said Grandon Gill, USF professor, DBA graduate from Harvard University and leader of the USF DBA program. “DBA candidates will develop a program of research tailored to their specific backgrounds and career goals.”

The cohort program will feature 25 candidates per class. The group will meet one weekend a month in two separate sections – February through June and August through December – for studies. After three years and 72 credit-hours, participates will graduate with their new degree.

“Business executives worldwide indicate that they have always had an interest in earning a PhD, but because of their upward career trajectory, they were reluctant to slow their careers to do so,” said Moez Limayem, USF College of Business dean. “This program has been created with that important factor in mind; careful scheduling will allow even the busiest executives to earn the degree without interrupting their careers.”

The Association of Advanced Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSP), an international accrediting organization, predicts a shortage of business school educators in the upcoming future. Industry leaders who wish to pursue a career in education can now do so. The DBA includes credits that will qualify its recipients for jobs as university professors and lecturers, if they so choose.

The deadline for applications is November 1. Applicants must have at least 12 years of experience in a C-level position. Though not required, a MBA degree is recommended. For more information, visit usf.edu/dba or contact 813-974-6755.
