Spotlight on Education: Southeast Wins Skills USA TV Production Championship

Published Friday, July 4, 2014

BRADENTON – For the fourth time in the last five years, students from Southeast High School’s Career Technology Television Production Program placed first at the SkillsUSA national competition in the category of “Broadcast News Program.” The students from Southeast competed last week against state champions from across the country to capture the first-place award in the annual competition held in Kansas City.

The students that comprise the national championship winning team are Luizangel Walle, Gabby Murphy, Sydney Mitchell and Danny Shevlin. To win the competition, the students had to write, produce and shoot a three-minute news video in the span of a few hours. Southeast High also won first-place at the national SkillsUSA competition in this same category in 2010, 2011 and 2012.

In addition, Southeast students Iris Lopez and Mallory Robinson placed third in the nation in the “TV Video Production” competition, in which students had to produce a 60-second video.

“I am very proud of the way these students represented Southeast High and the Manatee County School District,” said Mike Sanders, Director of Television at Southeast. “They have worked long and hard to develop their skills and they were able to demonstrate those skills on a national stage.”
