TBT Editor Featured on LWV Panel on Future of Media

Published Friday, February 7, 2014 12:04 am

BRADENTON -- Newspapers have been called a pillar of our nation’s democracy, in that only a well-informed electorate can participate effectively in democracy. Yet in recent years we see challenges to this important part of our society, with many newspapers being sold, merged or going out of business. How is this affecting the quality of the news we receive? How are the news media coping and changing?

On Monday, February 10, the League of Women Voters of Manatee County will present a public information program on the Future of Newspapers in the Digital Age. The panel of news experts discussing this issue will include Dr. Karen Dunlap, recently retired president of the nationally renowned Poynter Institute for Journalism; Bill Church, Executive Editor of the Sarasota Herald Tribune;  Joan Krauter, Executive Editor of the Bradenton Herald and Dennis Maley, Editor in Chief of the online newspaper The Bradenton Times.

The free program will be held at the Bradenton Woman’s Club, 1705 Manatee Ave. W., from 12 noon to 1:00 p.m. Doors open at 11:30 a.m. for a light lunch. Other upcoming programs in the series are: March 10: Immigration Reform; Apr. 7: Voting Rights.
