BRADENTON – Southeast was no match for the number-one ranked team in the nation as their rivals, the Manatee Hurricanes, blew them off the field Friday night for the second year in a row. Palmetto RB Josh Hicks made an impressive return as the Tigers routed Lakewood Ranch. Bayshore gets their first win of the season, but Braden River came up short against Port Charlotte, while looking for theirs.
Manatee marched right down the field and scored on the first possession, immediately asserting their dominance over the 'Noles. In fact, the Hurricanes wouldn't even have to punt until well into the third quarter. Southeast RB Courtney Allen broke a 57-yard TD run early in the game, but was held to a net total of 58 yards rushing on the night, while suffering several brutal hits by the Manatee defense, which held Southeast to under 200 yards total offense, en route to a 52-13 win.
Josh Hicks, who'd sprained his ankle in the season opener, finally returned to the backfield for Palmetto Friday night, racking up 278 yards rushing, including touchdown runs of 87, 65 and 57 yards. Palmetto, the number one-ranked 5A school in Florida, scored 28 points in the second quarter, putting the game far out of reach and setting up a 43-7 win, anchored by a defense that began the season as a question mark, only to emerge as one of Coach Dave Marino's biggest assets.
Scoreboard
Manatee 52 Southeast 13
Palmetto 43 Lakewood Ranch 7
Port Charlotte 29 Braden River 14
Cypress Lake 49 Bayshore 9
Bradenton Christian 28 Canterbury 14
