SARASTOTA – U.S. Rep. Vern Buchanan, R-FL, recently announced the winners of the inaugural 13th Congressional District Fire & Rescue and EMS Awards. The Congressman established the awards to give special recognition to fire & rescue and EMS officers, departments, or units for exceptional achievement.
“To be a first responder is a demanding profession that requires sacrifice, courage and a dedication to serve others,” said Buchanan. “Every day, brave men and women put themselves in harm’s way to protect our citizens, property and society. They deserve our gratitude and respect. I believe these awards are a fitting tribute to our first responders and a reminder of the important role they play in our communities.”
Award winners were chosen by an independent panel comprised of current and retired members of the fire & rescue community.
The following awards were presented during a ceremony in Sarasota:
- Lieutenant Tim Geer of the City of Bradenton Fire Department received the Congressional Career Service Award.
- Training Officer Timothy J. Hyden of the East Manatee Fire Rescue District received the Congressional Career Service Award.
- Captain Tom Sousa of the West Manatee Fire & Rescue received the Congressional Career Service Award.
- Firefighter Deborah Ann Schuster of the Sarasota County Fire Department received the Service Above and Beyond the Call of Duty Award.
- The Englewood Area Fire Control District received the Congressional Safety Awareness Campaign Award.
“I offer my sincere appreciation for the service and dedication of these outstanding individuals and heroes in our community,” concluded Buchanan.
The awards ceremony was held in memory of award winner Deborah Ann Schuster, a firefighter from the Sarasota County Fire Department. On May 5th of this year Deborah lost her stoic battle with cancer.
