BRADENTON – On Wednesday, the Florida Senate passed a bill that will allow students in Florida schools to give public prayer at school events – provided adults stay out of it.
SB 98 passed on a 31-8 vote. The bill will now go to the House, where it is also expected to pass. The eight Senators objecting argued that it could easily force students to take part in prayer, or risk being singled out for their religious differences. Other opponents also warned that the bill could lead to costly legal battles for our budget-challenged state.
Supporters of the bill countered that the measure would protect the religious freedom of students, many of whom now feel they are restricted from offering prayers that others can listen to, rather than only to themselves or in small groups. Others, warned that although the bill would allow for prayer in schools, supporters must be prepared for its application toward non-Christian religions.
