Hemingway Lives at the Crosley Estate

Published Thursday, February 2, 2012 12:01 am

SARASOTA – The romance of Ernest Hemingway's lost generation, the glamour of F. Scott Fitzgerald's jazz age and the innocence of Valentino's silver screen are relics of an Americana lost to an ancient time. But through Friday evening, you can step back in time and enjoy the "Moveable Feast" during Hemingway at the Crosley, a magnificent production that perfectly captures the beauty of the era through the inspired performances of a gifted cast.

This progressive interpretation that bears the Crosley tradition of multiple settings from which audiences choose three of four unique performances, is indeed a study in period pieces. The Crosley Seagate, a 1920's aristocratic mansion, is the perfectly-believable setting for this golden-aged gem.

Eileen Earnest dazzles as Gwendolyn Crosley, the eager and outgoing hostess. She's the perfect manic accompaniment to Todd Loughry's, debauchedness of F. Scott Fitzgerald, in their charming rendition of The Curious Case of Benjamin Button.

Thomas Laitinen espouses the alpha male confidence of Rudolph Valentino, while Catherine White channels a convincing Mary Pickford. Justus White continues to cement his legacy as the patriarch of the Crosley. Whether Hemingway or Charles Dickens, White carries the load as a confident and convincing lead with true warmth and stage presence.

Veteran director Gary Mazzu has proven himself in possession of a durable love of this, like other Crosley classics, while continuing to coax forth championship efforts from his talented cast. Don't miss your chance to experience Hemingway at the Crosley while there's still time.
