Man Shoots Dog During Attack in Bradenton

BRADENTON -- Richard Rucker, 52 Bradenton, was walking his dog a few blocks west of the IHOP on U.S. 41 in Bradenton when a pit bull that had been chained to a tree at a domestic residence broke free and charged him, according to a report from the Manatee County Sheriff's Office. The pit reportedly began attacking Rucker's dog before coming toward him.

Rucker drew his legally carried pistol and put one round into the pit bull, who fled into the woods nearby. Deputies located the shot dog and euthanized it, after determining it had been mortally wounded. Animal Control then responded.

Pit Bulls? Mean? Fact is if you are a person, and I use that term loosely, you can make any dog mean. I have had the pleasure of meeting incredible pits, and also pits trained to attack. I feel bad for the pit that was raised improperly and lost his life due to an idiot of an owner.

I agree with Caryn Hodge. It is the human that is responsible for making any dog safe. It sure isn't the dog's fault. Chaining up a dog. Just lovely. Right there you know they probably don't give much care to the dog. Love your dog, socialize it, train it and commit to it and put any dog fighters and anyone who attends and gambles on dog fighting in prison. These poor dogs, through reckless, uncaring breeding and dog fighting rings have truly been victimized and messed with. I volunteer at a shelter and there are so many pit bulls that are the most loving dogs you would ever experience and they continually suffer because of dog fighting and monsters who want to exploit them. There are plenty of good pit bull owners who have truly loving dogs because they did the right thing by them. Any dog can bite. It is time to make any pet owner more accountable for how they take care of their dog and force them to make that dog safe and don't abuse the dog.

I think what we are missing here is the responsibility or lack there of on the owner of the dog that was tied up. No dog should be tied up, it is similar to being in a cage. Pit bulls are sweet dogs. It is the owners that mistreat them, raise them to be violent and mean that make them bad and cause people to give all pit bulls the bad reputation they don't deserve. That dog owner should be cited for animal cruelty. I don't blame the person for protecting himself and I would have also if need be but we don't need to celebrate what happened. It is sad and unfortunate and an injustice to all dogs. We need to encourage people to be responsible and good dog owners and punish those who are not.

Good for this man who shot the dog that attacked him. He should be given a medal for performing a public service.
