Former Senator Jim Webb is testing the waters for a run at the Democratic nomination in 2016. Considering Hillary Clinton's name recognition, popularity with female Democrats and utter lock on the party's biggest sugar daddies, that seems like a fool's errand of sorts ... until Webb opens his mouth and you start to realize that he's got a well-honed message, likely to affect a broad swath of voters.

Growing up, we didn't have a swimming pool to cool off in during the sweltering summer months. The beach was too far away for a kid without a car to get to so we relied on secret swimming holes, hidden in the most unlikely of places to get us through the end-of-summer months. Recently, I revisited one of my favorite old swimming holes and found a couple new ones I could get used to frequenting.

Monday, the Palmetto City Commission will hold a discussion regarding the 2016 Riverwalk Regatta event during its workshop. The BOCC will discuss Millennials and workforce housing at its Tuesday meeting. The Bradenton City Council will workshop Wednesday, and a Land Use meeting will be held Thursday.

The Marauders (10-10) dropped their second straight close call against the Stone Crabs (14-6), falling 3-1 on Tuesday night at Charlotte Sports Park. RHP Matt Benedict (2-1) turned in a quality start, tossing six innings and surrendering three runs in his first loss.

At the April 21 BOCC meeting, a healthy debate broke out over why and how both the Manatee County Commission and Manatee County School Board failed to act by not addressing the suspension on impact fees that has now expired. This dereliction of duty has cost the county in upwards of $100 million in uncollected fees; Commissioner Vanessa Baugh says, "nonsense."

On Wednesday, Florida Senate President Andy Gardiner (R-Orlando) accused House members of violating the State Constitution after ending the legislative session Tuesday by packing up and going home, and demanded that they return. The following day, the Florida Democratic Caucus requested a state Supreme Court-given special order requiring the House to reconvene; justices denied the request. The early end to the session, brought on by fights between the two chambers over Medicaid expansion, killed several major bills and left work on the state budget unfinished.
