With one department under Manatee County Public Safety having decided to unionize, another having taken steps in that direction and two more discussing the possibility, citizens might want to start taking a closer look at how these essential services are being managed and why there are so many disgruntled employees within their ranks. When they do, they will likely find a lot of head-scratching red flags, along with what might be a silver-bullet solution.

The Marauders (11-5) notched a fourth shutout win in an eight day span and swept the Jupiter Hammerheads (6-10) three games in a row, seizing the series finale 4-0 on Saturday night at McKechnie Field. Bradenton has won six straight April games for the first time in franchise history.

Willis Smith Construction was recently awarded the contract for construction of a new visitor and nature center on the historic 440+ acres of Sarasota's Celery Fields for the Sarasota Audubon Society. The $1 million visitor center will serve as an urban bird sanctuary to promote ecotourism to Florida. The site features a count of 217 species of birds out of 300 recorded in the entire county.

The Manatee Tourist Development Council will meet Monday morning. Later that day, the Palmetto City Commission will convene for a workshop and regular meeting. During Tuesday's regular meeting, the BOCC will vote on on approval of a plat for a 67-lot subdivision. The Manatee School Board will have a workshop - with a review of a presentation by a new public accounting firm selected to provide external auditing - and a regular meeting that day. On Wednesday, the Bradenton City Council will have an afternoon workshop on a new gunfire alert and location technology for law enforcement, followed by a regular meeting in the evening.

In general, when you sell your home any amount you receive over your cost basis (what you paid for the home, plus capital improvements, plus the costs of selling the home) is subject to capital gains taxes. However, if you owned and used the home as your principal residence for a total of two out of the five years before the sale (the two years do not have to be consecutive), you may be able to exclude from federal income tax up to $250,000 (up to $500,000 if you're married and file a joint return) of the capital gain when you sell your home.

The Marauders (10-5) defeated the Jupiter Hammerheads (6-9) 5-3 on Friday night at McKechnie Field. Bradenton opened up a 5-0 lead and fended off a late Jupiter rally to improve its winning streak to a season-best five games.
