The long-awaited Manatee County Area Transit (MCAT) route to Lakewood Ranch begins Jan. 3. The new service is an extension of MCAT’s Route 6 which currently now serves the Cortez Road corridor from Bradenton Beach to DeSoto Station.

In most cases, dredging a pass would provide for safer navigation, but that is not the case in Sarasota and Manatee Counties regarding Longboat Pass, New Pass, and Big Pass. The counties want the sand for beaches, while ignoring the primary goal of these passes which is safe navigation. The winner of the sand in one location also impacts the wave energy and sand movement for the loser, especially once a groin is constructed.

These men invested a huge amount of time and money into their vision. Despite hardships, they succeeded in paving the way for future development. This is the story of their plight.

After covering local rallies and reporting on OWS and other major protest events throughout the U.S., I thought I had a very good grasp on what was occurring on the ground in Zuccotti Park. But as the magnitude of the movement began to turn it into an historic event, I knew I had to see what was happening first hand. So I traveled to Manhattan last weekend and spent a day speaking with the protestors, and I was surprised at what I found.

Sarasota can instantly conjure images when mentioned. Pristine beaches, wealth, the circus and a vibrant arts scene will immediately come to mind for most, and those images would be correct. But Sarasota means a lot of things to a lot of people. It’s also home to thriving Mennonite and Amish communities, two cultures that are typically associated with farming and minimalism, not the decadent lifestyle that also come to mind when Sarasota is mentioned.
