The equity markets suffered a modest setback last week in what can only be described as a very good performance. The fact that the short and intermediate trends were not threatened by recent world events is a testament to the resiliency the stock market has exhibited the past five years. Second quarter earnings reports on balance have been stronger than forecast. Consensus estimates are that corporate earnings will grow 6.7%.

When an 18-year-old from Ohio suddenly died just before high school graduation this May, the cause of death was linked to a new form of substance abuse - pure caffeine powder. Local substance prevention coalition, LiveFree! Coalition of Pinellas, is calling for public attention on teenagers’ caffeine abuse.

The University of South Florida will host guest speaker Jane Goodall on September 9 as part of its Frontier Forum and University Lecture series. Sponsored by the USF College of Arts and Sciences, the event will consist of a presentation by Goodall in which she will discuss her life, career and activism, a Q+A session in which audience members will have the opportunity to ask questions, and a book signing which will feature her latest publication, Seeds of Hope: Wisdom and Wonder from the World of Plants.

Twenty Manatee County Students from Lakewood Ranch High School and Braden River Middle School participated and competed at the Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) 2014 National Leadership Conference held recently in San Antonio. More than 7,000 members, advisers, alumni, and guests from across the country gathered and took part in STAR Event Competitions at the conference. The conference was based on the student-originated theme “SOAR.”

Red tide has been killing offshore sea life in the northeast Gulf of Mexico. A front will bring an increase in wind and seas during the first part of the week. Capt. Rick Grassett recommends looking for reds and big trout on shallow flats or edges of bars early during the the day. He says catch and release snook fishing should also be good in passes and around docks and bridges close to passes.

As Dickens mocked government by naming one branch the Circumlocution Department, because things went round and round but never came out the other end, so corporate welfare and Congress are intimately tied together to go round and round in a rapacious and obvious back scratching exercise,
where Congress votes for subsidies to the companies that then provide campaign donations to help the elected officials get back in office to continue the cycle.

Manatee County has five openings for the Criminal Nuisance Abatement Board which hears cases regarding criminal nuisances on places or premises located in unincorporated areas of the county. Two of the board seats are one-year terms. Three seats are two-year terms.

The Flying Tigers (51-51, 9-26) erased a 2-0 deficit in the middle innings and defeated the Marauders (57-47, 22-13) 5-3 on Sunday afternoon at Joker Marchant Stadium. Jose Osuna had a big day at the plate in defeat, going 4-for-4 with three doubles, one run scored, and one driven in.

Seeing as we're about to enter another nasty Florida electoral season, I figured mid July would be a good time to get out on the road and remind myself of all the things I love about this state that I've called home for the last 13 years, so that I might recall them as answers when I inevitably ask myself what the hell I'm doing here amid the absurdity that is sure to precede November 4.

If you have kept up with my column, you would know that the beef business was a huge industry in Manatee County from the mid to late 1800s to the early 1900s. In those days, “cow hunters” rounded up Florida scrub cattle, a breed that evolved from early Spanish cattle. The cows were shipped to Cuba at little cost to the herder. But one of the most notorious cow hunters to come out of Manatee County went by the name of Bone Mizell.
