The world seems to be made up of two kinds of people: those who view Black Friday as an integral part of our social fabric, and those who see it as the scourge of the holiday season. I am firmly entrenched in the latter camp. If you feel my pain, here are some great (and socially responsible) ways to shop for the holidays without diving down into the muckety muck of the big box retailers.

Taylor Robenalt has loved art since she was a little girl. Growing up, she admired prints from the likes of Dali and Georgia O’Keefe, and the various art and crafts that decorated her childhood home. Robenalt’s interest in her mother’s art collection would ultimately lead her down the path to becoming an artist.

Thanksgiving has become an integral part of the American tradition; turkey, football games, pumpkin pies and the pleasing colors of autumn leaves - even a few here in sunny Florida. Our melting pot of traditions are as eclectic as our citizenry. Though times are tough for many, take today and be thankful for the things that money can't buy.

Mariners are advised to exercise caution as an area of high pressure moves over coastal waters over the next few days. The next lionfish prevention step takes effect November 26. This months is Manatee Awareness Month. The FWC is asking all boaters to be cautious of our favorite gentle giants while operating their boats. Cownose stingrays are migrating by the thousands!

Adoption fees are waived during Manatee County Animal Services’ “Black Saturday” pet adoption special Nov. 29. Families can take home a dogs, puppies, cats and kittens Saturday for only a $15 registration fee for Manatee County residents. Dogs are regularly priced at $80; cats are regularly $40.

With Braden River's loss to East Lake last week, the Manatee Hurricanes are now the sole Manatee County high school football team left standing in the playoffs. The Canes will go head-to-head with Orlando's Dr. Phillips Panthers in a home game on Friday.
