Katrina – Five Years After: What Have We Fixed? This week was the 5th anniversary of the most devastating natural disaster that has ever struck U.S. soil. America watched in dazed frustration, as the most wealthy and powerful nation in the world tripped over its own feet, bungling relief efforts and failing to live up to even the minimum standards of most peoples' imaginations. Five years later, we look at what has changed.

Special Feature: Old Florida: Mixon's Fruit Farm

Few things say Florida like citrus, though it always amazes me how many California oranges make their way to my local supermarket. By the same token, much of our best fruit gets shipped off, but if you're looking for local fruit, fresh squeezed juice, or the best lemonade on the planet, local grower, Mixon's Fruit Farm has got you covered.

Spudnuts: Turner's Donuts is a Relic of an American Icon

Lifelong Bradenton residents and well-traveled retirees might remember an iconic donut chain known for its unique potato-flour treats. In the 1950's, hundreds of Spudnuts Donuts were scattered across the country. Few local residents realize, however, that Turner's Donuts in downtown Bradenton is one of a few dozen that have survived independetly to offer the "potato raised" to a new generation.

Katrina – Five Years After: Making it Right

Many celebrities portray themselves as social activists or philanthropists, while often falling far short of the images they create. Superstar actor Brad Pitt seems to be an exception. Frustrated by the slow pace of post-Katrina reconstruction, Pitt founded the Make it Right Foundation with the goal of building 150 eco-friendly, affordable homes in the Lower Ninth Ward. Three years into the project, 50 houses have been completed and Pitt's intensity continues to burn.

Sunday on the Bay: Life Aboard
When I tell people of my various excursions in my double life aboard another country's boat, they tend to view it as a vacation, but it is actually a way of life that many people follow. Life aboard can be just as routine or frustrating as land life, but it possesses a uniqueness that I personally, have fallen in love with. But living on a boat can be trying and it isn’t for everyone.

Right tree in the right place was the motto of the county commission meeting on Tuesday. Residents voiced both opposition and support for a tree ordinance that would ban large trees from small residential lots in new developments.
