The Hurricanes exceeded all expectations when they ran over #2 in the nation Plant last Friday night, 48-10. Mike Blakely and Quinton Pompey upped their already considerable value as multiple Division I schools attempt to sign the local stars. This week the team heads up north to tackle a similarly endowed PA team known as the “football factory” – and this one counts!

Right tree in the right place was the motto of the county commission meeting on Tuesday. Residents voiced both opposition and support for a tree ordinance that would ban large trees from small residential lots in new developments. The motive was presented in depth by Bill Bors of the Natural Resource Department. It seems that these giant shade-providers are at war with infrastructure and public safety – at the expense of the taxpayer.

The frequent and heavy rains of the past week have accomplished two major changes on the local angling scene. One is the abnormally hot water temperatures that have been cooled a bit and the big influx of fresh water into the estuary will bring on some welcome changes going into the final few weeks of summer.

Tuesday was a busy day for the county commission. Several people came forward in opposition for a proposed tree ordinance. There was a county planning evaluation, a proposed sign regurlation ordinance, Terra Ceia overlay discussion, golf carts on sidewalks debate, wetland protection and tree problems in yesterday's meeting.

Many celebrities portray themselves as social activists or philanthropists, while often falling far short of the images they create. Superstar actor Brad Pitt seems to be an exception. Frustrated by the slow pace of post-Katrina reconstruction, Pitt founded the Make it Right Foundation with the goal of building 150 eco-friendly, affordable homes in the Lower Ninth Ward. Three years into the project, 50 houses have been completed and Pitt's intensity continues to burn.
