by Dennis Maley - There has never been a clear mission in Afghanistan and probably because it would have read something like this: try to completely reinvent a desperately poor, woefully uneducated, culturally backward, fundamentally religious and technologically stunted culture into a pro-western democracy that is favorable to American interests in the surrounding region – or at least assemble a passable facade in the form of a puppet government that can pacify its people, so long as it's living high on the hog at the expense of American taxpayers. Do it all at the end of a rifle, asking American servicemen and women to lay down their lives for the cause.

By Dennis Maley - When Rick Scott recently signed a bill forbidding Florida governments from contracting with companies doing business in Cuba or Syria, the Miami-based anti-Castro contingent declared victory. However, it was quickly pointed out that federal law prohibits states from enacting international trade restrictions, and the Governor's office had to back peddle, acknowledging that it was unenforceable, to the venomous chagrin of those he was seeking to appease.

After some debate, the long-term lease was approved and construction is expected to start this summer.

When former Florida Governor Reuben Askew implemented our judicial merit retention system in 1978, it was a pragmatic solution rooted in the politics of the day. But more than three decades later, we must take a look at the process and ask whether it is benefiting the judicial system, or instead politicizing the bench in a manner that threatens both its credibility and function.

As the Bradenton Marauders (18-19) sat out Tuesday night’s game due to a rain delay, there was much to think about. The second overall pick in the 2010 Draft, Jameson Taillon, started off the year a bit shaky with a loss in his first appearance. Taillon racked up 4.91 earned runs in only 3.2 innings. However, with more appearances under his belt he has become more consistent, and he took on a huge role in the Marauders’ starting rotation. Consistency, in all facets of the game, is the key to successful teams.

For years, the Manatee Sheriff's Office has been in need of a new video surveillance system at their Manatee County Judicial Center and DeSoto Center. State law requires local governments to retain video records for at least 30 days. Tuesday, after ironing out a few wrinkles, the BOCC sealed the deal for a system that triples MSO's video storage capacity and provides for additional cameras.

Adoption of Resolution R-12-113, at Tuesday's BOCC Special Meeting, approving FY 2012-2013 grants from the West Coast Inland Navigation District (WCIND), failed to include two of the requests made by the Town of Longboat Key. Based on a history of grading errors, the National Center for Fair & Open Testing has called for an independent audit and investigation of Pearson, the company that designed and graded the state’s 2012 FCAT exams. “Pearson has a troubling history of testing errors, the worst in an unregulated, irresponsible industry,” said FairTest Public Education Director Bob Schaeffer, a Southwest Florida resident.
