Expanding Phosphate Mining... Seriously?

by Dennis Maley As the Manatee County Commission gets set to vote on a Duette phosphate mining expansion recommended for approval by the county's planning commission, we need to again ask when Florida is going to seriously evaluate the cost/benefit ratio of placating such a disaster-prone industry that has brought relatively little to the table, considering the havoc it's wreaked on our state.

Changing the Culture One Tomato at a Time

by John Rehill It's said that when the elephants fight, all of the grass gets trampled. Nowhere is that more true than within the industry of tomato growers. The battle is not between the individual growers, but between the market and the culture in which it operates. Industrial monoculture farming is not the family farm it has replaced  – not even close. In today's market, it's often not an early freeze or a drought that dictates success. The corporate-structured safety nets guarantee profits for some, often while making the destruction of their crop a part of the business. The cost to the public, however, goes far beyond their wallets.

TBT Journalist's Palmetto History Pictorial Now Available

by Dennis Maley If you've ever been to a bookstore, chances are you've seen Arcadia Publishing's Images of America Series. The independent publisher has produced thousands of photographic histories for towns all across the United States, using local authors and historians. For its newest entry, Palmetto, Arcadia tapped our own Merab Favorite to assemble a pictorial of this Manatee County town. The result is the history-rich tale that fans of her Sunday Favorites column would expect, told through rare and iconic photographs, enhanced by the author's detailed and poignant captions.

In a Tough Market, the Red Barn Might be the Best Location in the County

With retailers still reeling from the downturn, there is a constant struggle to attract potential customers to the store where they might spend their hard-earned money. On a recent weekend, I noticed something striking – there's one place in Manatee County that's all but overrun by cash-wielding shoppers looking for one-stop deals – the Red Barn.

After several anti-abortion bills were passed in the 2011 session, it was expected that the issue would subside as the legislature tackled redistricting and casino gambling in 2012. However, of the 10 abortion-related bills already filed, three made it out of committee this week.

I met Newt Gingrich in 1993 when he spoke at Bradenton Municipal Auditorium.  Never having heard of the man I went into that lecture prepared to hear a typical half-hearted prepared political speech. I left the auditorium a changed person: a "born again American".

The 4th of July celebration is a Palmetto tradition that has taken place for decades, but last year, officials decided to kick things up a notch. Over 8,000 spectators attended the free Eddie Money concert and firework show, which took place in Sutton Park. This year, the Palmetto Community Redevelopment Agency booked Three Dog Night for the headliner. Mama won’t "tell you not to come" to this family-oriented celebration which will feature at least three bands.

On Tuesday, the House Agriculture & Natural Resources Subcommittee unanimously approved proposed state water quality standards that would replace federal pollution limits that opponents say are too expensive to implement. The committee agreed to file HB 7051, which would waive requirements in Florida law that the Legislature ratify rules that would cost more than $1 million to implement. Meanwhile, while the DEP and EPA continue negotiations, a lawsuit is being heard in federal court, challenging the EPA's position.

Though municipalities, law enforcement agencies, religious groups and the Florida Chamber of Commerce had lobbied hard for the demise of Internet Cafes, storefront casinos that operate through a loophole in the state's sweepstakes rules, it looks as if they might not only survive the 2012 session, but see new regulations put in place that could ensure their long-term existence.
