by Dennis Maley - There has never been a clear mission in Afghanistan and probably because it would have read something like this: try to completely reinvent a desperately poor, woefully uneducated, culturally backward, fundamentally religious and technologically stunted culture into a pro-western democracy that is favorable to American interests in the surrounding region – or at least assemble a passable facade in the form of a puppet government that can pacify its people, so long as it's living high on the hog at the expense of American taxpayers. Do it all at the end of a rifle, asking American servicemen and women to lay down their lives for the cause.

Striving for excellence is a statement found in many organizations. Employees at The Salvation Army have taken excellence to a whole new level through an internal initiative called “STEP Up,” Strategic Targets for Exceptional Performance. Sparked by the human resources department, Salvation Army employees were challenged to step out of their normal roles and volunteer to “STEP Up” to more effectively serve our community. One such initiative can be found on the wall of the community dining room at the 14th Street Social Services complex, where team member Maribel Garcia accepted the challenge to share inspiration with staff and community through a very special art project.

There was much talk this week about student loans and their subsidized interest rates. The Seahorse Gift Shop attracted folks from all over the state, tourists and locals alike. Ed Winter’s menagerie of “pets” included alligators, rattlesnakes, monkeys and even a 50-year-old macaw named Scarlett. It wasn’t just the animals that drew in customers.
