John McKinnley learned at an early age what southern cooking is all about. In the sixties and seventies, John's grandfather Anderson Carnegie made mouth-watering Ribs and Chicken for local church suppers. But it was John's father Julius - the other J in J & J - who learned how to build a successful restaurant from the family recipes.
With only $10,000 and a dream, Julius opened the restaurant in 1979. Although it had but five small tables that could only seat 10 customers, the restaurant was a tremendous success.
In 1984 the family moved the restaurant to its present location, and it has been a neighborhood presence ever since.
Known as the best BBQ in the state, J & J plans to continue serving the community for years to come.
